The height of her fame occurred in 1941, when she won the Oscar for best actress, for her performance in the film: “Kitty Foyle” (1940), playing the protagonist “Kitty Foyle”. The actress also won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical in 1955, in one of her many partnerships with actor and dancer Fred Astaire (1889-1987).

The actress was married five times. Her first marriage lasted just two years, to American vaudeville dancer, singer, comedian, and musician Jack Pepper (1902-1979) from 1929 to 1931; the second marriage was longer, lasting 6 years, with the American actor Lew Ayres (1908-1996) from 1934 to 1940; the third marriage also lasted 6 years, with another American actor John Calvin Briggs (1920-1998) from 1943 to 1949; the fourth marriage lasted 4 years, with a French actor who later became an executive at the cosmetics brand Revlon, Jacques Bergerac (1927-2014) and finally, the fifth and last marriage, with another singer, actor, director and American film producer Gerard William Marshall (1917-1994) from 1961 to 1969.
