This name I present is that of a pioneer of the seventh art. Alice Guy-Blaché was the first director and screenwriter of fiction films in French cinema. She released her first work: “La fée du chou” (1896), being a visionary in the use of the chronophone to synchronize sound and image. Alice also pioneered film coloring, hiring interracial casting, and using special effects in scenes.
She was born in Saint-Mandé, France, on July 1, 1873 and died in the United States, in Wayne, New Jersey, on March 24, 1968, aged 94.
Alice was married to the British-born American producer and screenwriter: Herbert Reginald Gaston Blaché-Bolton (1882-1953), from 1907 to 1922.
She left a 236-page written autobiography: “Les mémoires d’Alice Guy Blaché, Autobiographie d’une pionnière du cinéma”, published posthumously in (1976).
